Cabinetry Myths . . . Debunked

Brooke Bathie

There are plenty of misconceptions about custom cabinetry, but it’s time to set the record straight! Unlike common belief, custom cabinets provide lasting value, personalized design, and innovative storage solutions that pre-made options simply can’t compete with.

Whether your space is large or small, custom cabinetry is crafted to fit perfectly, and the process takes less time than you might expect. It’s a smart investment that enhances both style and functionality, tailored specifically for you.

1. Custom Cabinetry is Always Too Expensive

  • Myth: Custom cabinetry is unaffordable and only for luxury homes.

  • Reality: Custom cabinets can be tailored to a range of budgets. While they may cost more upfront, the quality and personalization can offer better long-term value and satisfaction compared to pre-fabricated options.

2. All Cabinets are Made the

Same

  • Myth: Cabinets are mostly the same, regardless of where you buy them.

  • Reality: There are significant differences in materials, construction methods, and finishes. High-quality cabinets often use solid wood, durable hardware, and thoughtful construction methods like dovetail joints, which lead to better longevity and durability.

3. Cabinets Made with MDF are

Inferior

  • Myth: MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) cabinets are poor quality.

  • Reality: MDF can be a great material for certain applications, especially in humid environments where solid wood might warp. When finished well, MDF can be just as durable as solid wood in some uses.

4. You Only Need Upper Cabinets

Custom cabinetry
  • Myth: Upper cabinets provide enough storage, and base cabinets are unnecessary.

  • Reality: A good balance between upper and base cabinetry is key for maximizing storage. Base cabinets can accommodate larger, heavier items and often have more customizable storage solutions.

5. Painted Cabinets are Harder to Maintain than Stained Cabinets

  • Myth: Painted cabinets require more upkeep and are prone to chipping.

  • Reality: Both painted and stained finishes have their maintenance requirements. While painted finishes may show chips more easily, high-quality paint and proper care can keep them looking new for a long time.

6. Custom Cabinets Take Too Long to Build

  • Myth: Custom cabinetry will delay a renovation project for months.

  • Reality: While custom cabinets do take longer than stock or semi-custom options, an experienced custom cabinetmaker can work within your timeline. Pre-planning helps ensure that any potential delays are managed effectively.

7. Soft-Close Drawers and Doors are Just a Luxury

  • Myth: Soft-close features are an unnecessary luxury.

  • Reality: Soft-close drawers and doors increase the lifespan of cabinets by preventing slamming, reducing wear and tear, and offering a more refined user experience.

8. Cabinets Should Only Be

Made of Solid Wood

  • Myth: Solid wood is the only material worth using for cabinetry.

  • Reality: Solid wood is not always the best choice for every part of the cabinet. Plywood and engineered wood are often used for structural components because they resist warping and provide stability.

Custom cabinetry

9. Stock Cabinets Are Just

as Good as Custom

  • Myth: Stock cabinets can match the quality and customization of custom cabinets.

  • Reality: Stock cabinets may work for some applications, but they lack the ability to be tailored to specific spaces and tastes. They also may not offer the same level of craftsmanship, materials, or attention to detail.

10. Cabinets Don’t Need to Match the Rest of the Home

  • Myth: Cabinets are a stand-alone feature and don’t need to match the home’s overall design.

  • Reality: Cabinets are a significant part of the aesthetic of a kitchen, bathroom, or other space. Coordinating them with the home’s style can enhance the overall look and feel.
