Restoration based on gloss level:
Matte/Satin: Sand with 180 or 220 grit fine sandpaper until the cut is gone. Restore the finish with an abrasive cleanser and a Green Scotch-Brite pad.
Semi-gloss: Sand with 400 grit sandpaper. Restore the finish with a non-abrasive cleaner and a White Scotch-Brite pad.
High-gloss: Sand with 400 grit sandpaper. Wipe the surface and continue with 600 grit sandpaper. Buff with a white polishing compound and a low speed (1,500 - 2,000 RPM) polisher, equipped with a wool pad.
General Dos and Don'ts
Clean spills promptly: Wipe up spills as soon as possible to prevent staining. Use a soft cloth or sponge and a mild, soapy water solution for regular cleaning.
Avoid harsh chemicals: Avoid using abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, or harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia, as they can damage the surface of the countertop.
Use cutting boards and trivets: To prevent scratches and heat damage, always use cutting boards for food preparation and trivets or hot pads under hot pots and pans.
Regularly clean: Clean the countertops regularly with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth or sponge. Rinse thoroughly with water and dry with a soft cloth to prevent water spots or streaks.
Remove stains carefully: For stubborn stains, you can use a mild abrasive cleaner like Soft Scrub, Bon Ami, or a mixture of baking soda and water. Apply the cleaner to the stain, scrub gently with a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse thoroughly with water and dry.
Avoid excessive force: While Corian is durable, avoid dropping heavy objects on the countertop or using excessive force when cutting or chopping to prevent chipping or cracking.
Sand out scratches: Minor scratches can often be buffed out using a mild abrasive cleaner and a Scotch-Brite pad or a fine-grade sandpaper (400-600 grit). Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for sanding and polishing.
Consider professional refinishing: If your Corian countertops become severely damaged or heavily scratched over time, you may consider hiring a professional to refinish or repair them.
Regular maintenance: Periodically, you may need to re-polish your Corian countertops to maintain their shine. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for specific products and procedures.
Preventive measures: Finally, to prevent damage, avoid placing extremely hot objects directly on the countertop, and use caution with sharp objects to prevent scratches.
